Monobenzone Cream USP 20% w/w is a skin depigmenting agent.
It’s most commonly prescribed for people with extensive vitiligo — a condition where patches of skin lose their natural pigment (melanin).
Here’s what you should know:
1. How it works
- Monobenzone works by permanently destroying melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) in the skin.
- This results in depigmentation of the remaining normal skin so that it matches the lighter patches from vitiligo.
- Because the effect is irreversible, it’s not used for temporary skin lightening.
2. Usage
- Applied topically to unaffected pigmented skin (not to the vitiligo patches).
- Usually applied once or twice daily, as prescribed by a doctor.
- Depigmentation may take months to complete.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes.
3. Important precautions
- Permanence: Once depigmented, skin will not regain its natural pigment.
- Sun sensitivity: Skin becomes very sensitive to sunlight and more prone to burns — broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing are essential.
- Not for cosmetic skin lightening: Its use for skin bleaching in people without vitiligo is discouraged and may be unsafe.
4. Side effects
- Redness, itching, mild burning sensation at application site.
- Rare allergic reaction.
- Uneven pigmentation if not applied
How to Apply
Step 1: Wash & dry the skin
- Use mild soap and lukewarm water.
- Pat dry completely
Step 2: Apply thinly
- Apply only to normally pigmented areas, not to white vitiligo patches.
- Use a small amount and rub in gently until absorbed.
Step 3: Frequency
- Usually 1–2 times daily, as your doctor prescribes.
- If skin becomes too irritated, your doctor may advise reducing frequency.
Step 4: Wash hands
- Wash hands immediately after applying, unless treating your hands
Precautions
-
Avoid sunlight: Depigmented skin is highly sun-sensitive.
- Use broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen daily.
- Wear hats, sunglasses, long sleeves when outdoors.
- Avoid mucous membranes: Keep away from eyes, mouth, inside nose, and genitals.
- Test first: Your doctor may recommend a small patch test to check for irritation.
- Clothing: Cream can bleach fabrics — let it absorb before dressing.
Treatment Timeline
- Initial results: Usually visible after 1–4 months.
- Full depigmentation: Can take 6–12 months or more.
- Maintenance: Occasional reapplication may be needed if some pigment returns.
